Research topics:
The Hydrology and Hydraulic Constructions Research Group (Hylab) focuses on issues related to water and its interaction with human activities. Water is a fundamental resource for human activities, both for purposes directly linked to human consumption (drinking water) and indirectly for availability in agriculture (irrigation water) and industry. The unavailability of water for irrigation and industrial purposes causes economic damage to agricultural production and the food supply chain.
Hylab conducts research aimed at forecasting drought events in order to prepare mitigation measures in advance, through both structural solutions (reservoirs) and non-structural ones (adjustment of supply systems, use of alternative water sources).
The study of climate change — which plays a crucial role in the occurrence of droughts — has been carried out by Hylab for over a decade, using statistical techniques and artificial intelligence, always adhering to the scientific guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Hylab also conducts research on groundwater and its pollution, with the awareness that the use of groundwater, already widely practiced, will increase during drought periods and as the availability of surface water with suitable characteristics continues to decline.
